Coaching culture

When, as an organisation, you strive to create a coaching culture, you are thereby in line with what research shows successful companies do. The International Coaching Federation (ICF), together with the Human Capital Institute, conducts annual research into the impact of a coaching culture in organisations. Time and again, it turns out that coaching is not just “nice to have”, but contributes significantly to organisational results. The organisation’s turnover and productivity growth are significantly higher than those of industry peers. Employee engagement is considerably higher. And team functioning improves.

So what is meant by a coaching culture? Investment is made in professional internal coaches and leaders who use coaching skills to support employees at all levels to develop and achieve their goals. In a coaching culture, all three modalities of coaching (internal coaches, external coaches and leaders using coaching skills) are available.

A coaching culture contributes to the future success of an organisation because it activates employees’ problem-solving abilities, learning and growth. In this era of disruptive change and transformation, you don’t survive as an organisation if you think you have all the right answers. Only organisations with employees who continuously learn and adapt remain successful and will thrive.

Support in creating a coaching culture

But how do you do that as an organisation? Develop a coaching culture? Consider the following:

  • How do you ensure that coaching is available to all employees?
  • How do you set up an internal coaching pool?
  • What does this mean for all kinds of HR processes?
  • How do you ensure that leaders and internal coaches have had proper coaching training?
  • How do you assess and value coaching skills of your leaders?
  • How do you know if the external coaches you work with have a good professional foundation?
