Mentor Coaching

If you approach your role as a coach professionally, you want to build on a solid foundation. This includes sound training, practical experience, and, if desired, certification from a professional association. Those pursuing the latter through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) require mentor coaching as part of the credentialing process.

ICF describes mentor coaching as “a collaborative process where coaches receive feedback based on observed sessions to refine their skills and style in alignment with the ICF Core Competencies”.

It’s an opportunity to be coached on your coaching by an experienced coach. Where are you already applying the competencies well? Where is there room for improvement or expansion of your repertoire? How can you further develop the competencies to increasingly find your own style and be on your way to masterful coaching?

Mentor coaching can serve various purposes:

Obtaining an ICF-credential (ACC, PCC, MCC)

If you are aiming for your first ICF credential, or wish to achieve a higher level, the following applies:
• You need 10 hours of mentor coaching.
• 7 Hours of this may be in a group.
• At least 3 hours must be individual.

Together with your mentor coach, you will work towards a suitable recording of a coaching conversation (1 for ACC, 2 for PCC/MCC) that you can use for your certification application.

Renewing your ICF credential

Do you already have an ICF credential? Then you renew it every three years by collecting 40 CCE-credits (continuing coaching education).
•  For ACC-renewal: 10 hours of mentor coaching required.
•  For PCC of MCC: not required, but you may use up to 10 hours of mentor coaching and up to 10 hours of supervision for your CCEs.

In this case, it’s not about a new recording. The focus is on deepening, refinement and professional development.

Continuous development as a coach

Even without certification requirements, mentor coaching can be a powerful way to continue growing. Your mentor coach listens, provides targeted feedback and helps you with, for example:
•  strengthening your own style;
•  recognising patterns in your conversations;
•  further development of competencies;
•  expanding your skills towards greater mastery.

What can you expect?

— Your mentor coach always has at least the credential level you are aiming for.
— The approach is strength-based: discovering what already works and building on that.
— You work with real coaching conversations, not role-plays.
— You record conversations (with permission) and discuss them together.
— During the session, you can listen to the recording together and discuss it live, or your mentor coach listens to it beforehand to prepare feedback
— To practise, you can coach your mentor-coach; your mentor-coach can also coach you, so that you have the experience and a role model.
— You determine the format and timing of the sessions in consultation.

The difference with supervision is that mentor coaching focuses specifically on the ICF core competencies. Supervision takes a broader perspective and can include all aspects and questions relating to yourself as a person in the role of coach.
